The Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin für Materialien und Energie (HZB) investigates and develops materials for a sustainable energy supply. For this purpose, HZB operates the electron storage ring BESSY II as well as several core labs, which offer an enormous variety of analytical methods. Issues from the research community are driving the further development of the experimental environment at BESSY II and vice versa; the possibilities offered by BESSY II are accelerating energy research.

With approximately 1100 employees, the HZB is today one of the largest non-university research centres in Berlin. BESSY II is also available for external measurement guests. Every year, the HZB records about 1500 guests from all over the world.
